Bourbon Tunnel of Naples
Dubbed the 'Galleria Borbonica" (Bourbon Gallery) we will journey through this underground tunnel and discover the secret of a Bourbon King. 40 ft. below the streets of Naples exists a tunnel that was once commissioned by the Bourbon King, Ferdinand II, to connect the Royal Palace of Naples to the sea behind the Castel dell'Ovo. However, the King died before the tunnel was completed, and it was left unfinished and largely forgotten until WWII. During WWII the subterranean corridors and neighboring cisterns were utilized as air raid shelters, housing up to 10,000 Neapolitans. You will see artifacts left by the people who sheltered here, including children's toys, gas masks, and personal items like hair brushes. You will even see the remains of toilet blocks and beds. After the war until the 70's, the Bourbon Tunnel became a dumping ground for wartime rubble and unwanted debris, storing everything from fascist statues to impounded cars. The tunnel was, once again, forgotten but, thankfully, restored in the 2000's. You will see vintage cars and wartime rubble that are still scattered throughout the tunnel.
