Become a Certified Lifeguard!

  • Lifeguarding is a fantastic summer job for teens (15 years and older) or a great year-round job for adults.
  • Mandatory pre-test must be completed before attending class.
  • American Red Cross certification is valid two years.
  • Fee required for Certification Course

Open to U.S. ID card holders, ages 15 years and older

Pre-Test date will be scheduled upon registration.

Participants must successfully pass the (free) pre-test before registering for the lifeguard certification course. 

The pre-test includes:
1. 
- A 50-meter swim using front crawl or breaststroke (or a combination of both) without touching the ground or the sides of the pool
- Maintain position at the surface of the water for two minutes by treading water using only the legs, floating or both
- A 50-meter swim using front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both without touching the bottom or sides of the pool

2. A timed event within 50 seconds:
- Starting in the water, swim 20 meters with no goggles
- Submerge to the bottom of the pool to retrieve a 10-pound brick
- Return to the surface to swim or walk holding the brick with both hands
- Exit the water without using the steps or ladder

The course is delivered using a variety of methods including:
Blended Online Content (six hours), Power Point presentations, guided group discussions, guided group activities and practical demonstrations and training. The course is approximately 23 hours with 60 percent of the course taking place in the water. 

The American Red Cross Shallow Lifeguarding certificate is valid for two years from the date of successful completion of the course. The course will include all elements of Pool Rescue Techniques, Lifeguard Theory, First Aid, CPR and AED concepts for the professional rescuer.
